Deng Cheng Wen depicts the famous anti-war activist and leader of the Indian independence movement, Mahatma Gandhi, walking barefoot into a wide expanse of space. He is pensive and thoughtful, with gaze cast downward and wrapped in simple clothes. There is a purity to the image, mirroring the non-violent stance of Gandhi in the Indian freedom movement. He neither claimed to be a prophet or philosopher, but focused solely on his cause - influencing generations of individuals thereafter.
He paints the faces of his university friends in his series, ‘The Lightness of Seeing’.
