5 under 5.000: A selection of landscape art from South-East Asia

Published 18 Jan 2019 by Marie
First-time art buyers or new collectors like to go for landscapes, and rightly so : the genre has a lot of qualities. Sceneries are decorative, they can fit in many different parts of the house, but they can also be innovative (the impressionists landscapes were considered revolutionary 150 years ago!) and, if you choose wisely, it can turn into a very fruitful investment! (Do I need to give you the current price of impressionists paintings?)

Here is our guide to affordable landscapes, with a distinctive South-East Asian touch.

Pan Kyi, Brimful of light, Acrylic on Canvas, 100 x 120 cm
The bamboo stalks and leaves catch the sunlight from the gaps in the trees, creating a mysterious sense of depth and shadow. A small figure walks through the vastness, not lonely, simply embraced by nature and its wholeness. Burmese artist Pan Kyi expresses his deep attachment to nature through this paintings. He loves quiet, empty spaces that exude solitude and peace. Take his painting home and enjoy its warmth and serenity every day.

Vu QD, Purple Flowers, Oil on Canvas, 100 x 150 cm
Vu Quoc Dung's love for his native land of Vietnam can be felt throughout his art. In this painting, the peace and quietude of the countryside is captured in the gentle colours depicting lush trees and a tranquil village. The cool shades of blue and purple instantly soothe our heart as we first look upon the artwork. His signature impasto technique transports us to a soft and poetic moment, almost out of time, so that we can feel, enjoy and treasure the beauty of a simple life.

Sunarto Sri Martha, Togetherness of harvest #3, Oil on Canvas, 71 x 100 cm
Indonesian artist Sunarto Sri Martha paints with characteristic bold strokes, thick texture and bright, contrasting colors. He draws inspiration from impressionists and naturalists, but also from the ancient art of fan painting. His landscapes of vibrant, tropical nature tamed by farmers harvesting its fruits are deeply Asian. Discover more paddy or tobacco fields in golden and emerald colours in Sunarto’s other paintings!

Aung Kyaw San, Landscape II, Acrylic on Canvas, 92 x 122 cm
Aung Kyaw San is famous for his tranquil, often photo-realistic landscapes, that he paints en plein air (outdoors), on site, to capture the spirit of the place as he is experiencing it himself. This mountain scenery looks peaceful, with pastel colours and a soft, almost blurry finish, yet the high cliffs bring a certain drama to the composition. Like nature itself, and like the figure standing on top of the cliff, the composition is all about balance: between sky and earth, between light and shadow, between life and death?

Darma Lungit, Rhythm of Flower, Oil on Canvas, 120 x 120 cm
Nature is not just about grand and majestic landscapes, it also flourishes in subtle and colourful blossoms, as Darma Lungit likes to depict them. His spontaneous and fresh style has been dubbed “palette flower painting”, and indeed he paints entire fields covered in rainbow-coloured wildflowers, symbols of freedom and spring and summer beauty. You can almost smell them!
