The introduction of lotus flowers in his new works is significant to Hong Zhu An's spirit of transformation. In this work, a few strands of lotus emerges from the water surface, signifying new growth that in time, would bloom to lush vegetation. Spring is a season of transformation, where winter retreats and a fresh, new year begins. In Chinese tradition, a new year is associated with wealth and prosperity. Hong wants to emulate this through the growth of the lotus on sparse, fertile earth, a verdant blossom amongst the thawing earth.
