This series draws on elements from Chinese traditional art, separating them from the Western sculpture. Liu Ruo Wang features soldiers riding on the back of horses, unified as one. The soldiers don a modern military uniform but carry an earthly colour and texture as though they are relics dug up from the ground. Their arrangement establishes on artistic and cultural aspects of the Qin Emperor’s terracotta warriors, giving a fresh expression to the notion of unity and power. Despite their tranquil appearance, the soldiers embody a sense of heroism standing in a triumphant stance, eliciting feelings of power, grandeur and admiration. Liu Ruo Wang’s work can be regarded as a monument to his people, by creating works about ordinary people from factual history, elevating their status as heroes.
He appreciates the spirit of the Chinese people – solemn and stirring, honest and simple, with an energetic nature.
