In this calligraphic masterpiece, Lim’s expressivity with the medium pays homage to Chinese calligraphy. Traditional Chinese characters are written in a cursive manner on a black and white surface, thus demonstrating the emotional reverie Lim portrays in this piece. Next, the title refers to the famous Tang Dynasty in ancient China, when the poet encountered a Pipa player by the river only to be enamoured by the tune and beauty of the music as Lim’s imagination runs wild on this mythical narrative.
He pioneered with a breakthrough style in 2005, called ‘hutuzi’ or muddled calligraphy - a melding of painting and calligraphy.
