In this work by Yu Nancheng, his masterful use of impasto replicates the slow and controlled movement of Tai Chi, with the leading lines illustrating the directional flow of energy in the work. There appears to be an infinite number of figures practicing the art form, who stand out against the black background with their vivid red colouring. The monumental structure of Tiananmen Square is seen in the distance, with the horizontal layering adding a sense of depth to the work and reinforcing its visual impact. Yu’s poetic placement of details make the artwork a pleasure to view, and creates an evocative work that has a striking effect on viewers.
